Two Unilorin staff remanded over NYSC call-up letter

Date: 2011-05-31

Two staff of the University of Ilorin, Brimmo Ibrahim Adeyemi, 49, and Jimoh Ijaya, 38, who allegedly issued a student of the institution a fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter, have been remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin.

The order to remand the accused was given by an Ilorin Chief Magistrate’s Court before whom they were arraigned on a two count charge of criminal conspiracy and forgery.

The accused were indicted sequel to a letter of complaint dated December 31, 2010 at the “F” Division Police Station, Tanke, Ilorin, by the Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mrs. Olufolake Oyeyemi. In the letter, she said a former student of the institution, Salihu Omolara Zainab of the Department of Sociology, was wrongfully mobilized for the NYSC.

According to her, Omolara was suspected to have gained admission into the university with a fake IJMB result in the year 2007 and due to that, she was denied clearance by the university screening body.

The complainant alleged that Omolara also swore to a fake affidavit and obtained a police report claiming the loss of her statement of result with which she collected an NYSC call-up letter and original degree certificate, in collaboration with the accused.

The complainant further alleged that the accused criminally conspired with the father of the student, Alhaji Salihu Akanbi to release the documents to her.

Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that investigation conducted at the state (CID), Ilorin, revealed that the accused actually conspired with Zainab and her father now at large, to commit the crime.

The prosecutor, Corporal Sanmi Abdullahi, who told the court that investigation into the matter is yet to be completed, objected to the bail application of the accused, urging the court to remand them.

Chief Magistrate S.B. Olanipeku ordered the remand of the accused at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin, and adjourned the case till June 2, 2011
