Lawmakers Decries Call to Abolish LG

Date: 2012-03-30

The Chairman, Committee A on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Hameed Giwa Afolabi yesterday asked Nigerians to some faceless groups who were calling for the scrapping of Local Government administration in Nigeria, describing them as anti-people.

This came on the heels of clamour by some groups in Abuja for the abolition of the third tier of government, which was published in some national ' dailies (The Herald not inclusive).

The Lawmaker, who spoke in an exclusive interview with The Herald in Ilorin yesterday, expressed displeasure over the persistent call, saying that local government administration remains government at the grass-root.

He said it would be naive of anyone to cry foul where there is none, stressing the need for the national Assembly to review the act governing local government administration so as to make it more responsive and responsible to the yearnings of the people.

He said; "I wonder why some faceless group would constitute themselves into nuisance on the act governing local government administration. Therefore, people must be, wary of this unidentified groups in order not to throw country in disarray".

"When we talk of grassroot, it is only local government that can take care of them adequately. It is worthy of note to state that the strength of any local government is measured by the resources it as available to it. It is within the resources it possess that the affairs of the government would be administered.

Afolabi maintained that local governments must be well funded to enable them discharge their statutory responsibility to the people.

Speaking on the joint-account between the state and the local government, the legislator opined that the policy is the best, which according to him, would fast tracks rural transformation.

Afolabi, however, tasked local government in the country to justify their monthly allocation from the federation account, by embarking on projects that would have true bearing on the lives of the citizenry.

He also called on monarchs to support government at all levels in maintaining absolute law and order and report' any , suspicious movement to the law enforcement agencies.
