Stamping out corruption requires strong political will - Kwara Speaker

The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Dr Ali Ahmad has stated that stamping  out corruption in the country would be determined by strong political will of the leadership at all levels of government. 


Ahmad who was represented by the House Committee Chairman on Information, Prince Saheed Popoola at the 10th Media Parliament of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council on Thursday maintained that with all hands on deck the mena‎ce would soon be rid out of the country. 


‎In a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker, Shuaib Abdulkadir, Ahmad added that once the problem of corruption is adequately tackled the country would be great. 


The Speaker however called for support and maximum cooperation for the present administration to enable it succeed in the arduous task ahead of it.


Similarly, Hon Moshood Bakare representing Omupo Constituency ‎said corruption has eaten deep into every facets of the nation economy, noting that every individual have major roles to play in tackling the scourge. 


Bakare opined that in stemming the tide of corruption out of the country, the nation should make political office less attractive as it was a service office and not an avenue to enrich one's purse. 


In his lecture entitled "Change Project: Ending Corruption and Ensuring Prosperity in Nigeria",‎ the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Najeem Salam lamented that for too long, corruption was seen and been treated as if it is a respected national monument in Nigeria. 


Salam stated that the change project is desirable and badly needed because according to him, it is the credible alternative now, but what must change must be made to change by the leadership at all levels of government. 


‎"...Our economy must be rolled back from the precipice by being imaginative and innovative ; our infrastructure must be radically overhauled, not stomach infrastructure" , he added. 


Earlier, in his opening remarks, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Alhaji Mahmud Babatunde Ajeigbe commended the union for the initiative to have come up with such important topic to be deliberated on which would have positive impact in the project of reforming the country.
