Over 75 Percent Kwara Women Shun Family Planning - Survey

Date: 2012-04-17

The Baseline Household Survey conducted by the Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) has revealed that more than 75 per cent of women in Kwara State don't use modern contraceptives for family planning due to wrong perceptions.

The perception as highlighted include need to have more children, lack of spouse's permission, fear of side effect and religious oppositions to the use of the contraceptive.

The survey was conducted in the five project sites of the NURHI in the state namely; Ilorin West, South and East; Irepodun and Offa Local Government Areas.

The NURHI's Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor, Dr. Abdulmumin Sa'ad, presented the survey on at the NURHI's family planning integration, Baseline Research Findings and Website Launch held in Ilorin.

Sa'ad stated that the family planning contraceptives prevalence rate in the state is about 21 per cent, compared to other parts of the country where the project is sited.

Sa'ad said, "One of the key issues here is that we see that the contraceptives prevalence rate is 21 percent lower compared to other cities in Nigeria meaning that the percentage of women using family planning in Ilorin is low.

"We know that family planning is one of the pillars of motherhood health initiatives. And to have reduction in maternal and infant mortality, we should give attention to family planning services and ensure that women who need family planning have access to this service.

"Another thing is that men's involvement in the promotion of family planning is very vital, most men refuse to allow their women access these services."
