Rebel govs won't appear before disciplinary committee -PDP

Date: 2013-10-25

The Peoples Democratic Party has said the seven governors who belong to the rival faction of the party, New PDP, are not to appear before its National Disciplinary Committee.

The committee, which was inaugurated in Abuja on Thursday, is saddled with the responsibility of instilling discipline in members of the party.

The committee, which is headed by a former Minister of Transport during the Second Republic, Dr. Umaru Dikko, has six other members.

Two of the committee members – the deputy chairman, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu – were absent at the inauguration.

Other members of the committee are Shuaibu Oyedokun, Hajiya Nana Quadir, Hussaini Kazaer and Solomon Onwe as secretary.

The aggrieved governors, who are in the rival faction of the party, are Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Aliyu Babangida (Niger); Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara); Murtala Nyako (Adamawa); and Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano).

Apart from the governors, others in their group are former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and some former governors – Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Shaba Lagiagi (Kwara) and Abdulahhi Adamu (Nasarawa).

A former Acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Kawu Baraje and National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, are both chairman and national secretary of the faction respectively.

Speaking with journalists after the committee was inaugurated, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, said no member of the New PDP would be sanctioned because of their actions.

He also said none of the governors and those in their camp had any case with the party to warrant their being disciplined.

He said, "The members of the New PDP and the G-7 (governors) have no case to warrant their being summoned before the committee as at today.

"The doors of our party are still open for reconciliation. Though, we have differences, but we are sorting ourselves out. I can tell you that there is no disciplinary action being contemplated against these people."
