ARMTI advocates scientific approach for food security
As the United Nation has reported that the population of Nigeria will increase from the present 160 to about 400 million by the year 2050, the implication of this is that production of food must be scientific in order to meet the food needs of the nation.
The Acting Executive Director of Agriculture and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), Ilorin, Kwara State, Mr Samuel Afolayan, who made this assertion at a programme held in Ilorin said pure and applied sciences should be applied in various areas of agricultural chains in order to increase its output.
According to Afolayan, in some instance, when enough food commodities are produced, there is problem of storage which makes supply of commodities particularly the perishable crops such as tomatoes, tubers and other seasonal vegetables scarce and limited.
He explained that application of sciences will help to preserve and store agricultural output as to guarantee it regular supply at all times, noting that most farm produce are consumed in their simple form which according to him can be transform into various varieties through sciences to increase it shelf-life.
Royal FM correspondent who was at the event reports that Afolayan further explained that the application of science in agriculture would boost adequate nutritional quality of food for a healthy and active life.
