Govs to meet Jonathan over $49.8bn un-remitted oil earnings

Date: 2013-12-13

The Governor Rotimi Amaechi led faction of the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF) has resolved to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan over matters of national importance, including allegations of unremitted oil revenue contained in a recent letter by Central Bank Governor Lamido Sanusi Lamido to President Jonathan.

In his letter to Jonathan, the CBN boss raised the alarm over theft of crude oil earnings, arising from alleged refusal of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to remit $49.8 billion (N8 trillion) to the federation account between 2012 and 2013.

Arising from a marathon meeting Wednesday night at the Rivers State Governor's Lodge, the governors in a communiqué signed by Governor Amaechi said: "Given the weighty allegations contained in a recent letter to Mr. President by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the state of the economy, members mandated the chairman to request for a meeting with the President in order to deliberate on issues of critical national importance."

The governors said the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for yesterday would have been an opportunity to address the issues but that it had been postponed. They observed that for four months, NEC has not been convened.

The group also expressed worries that "the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting for November, 2013 planned for 9 and 10 December, 2013 was shelved for undisclosed reasons."

The governors however commiserated with the people of the Republic of South Africa over the death of their former President and anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.

Similarly they remembered their former colleague, Late Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State who died one year ago in a plane crash.

Governors in attendance at the meeting were those of: Kwara, Lagos, Borno, Adamawa, Rivers, Jigawa (represented by his deputy), Oyo (represented by his deputy), Zamfara, Imo and Osun states.
