Gbemi Saraki's political moves

Date: 2009-07-05

Distinguished Senator representing Kwara Central in the Upper House of the National Assembly, Gbemisola Rukayat Saraki is undoubtedly, a well-bred woman.

Charming, beautiful and intellectually endowed, Saraki has been a lawmaker since 1999, with her first stint between 1999 to 2003 spent at the House of Representatives. Presently, the rumour circulating within the political circles in Kwara State is the Senator's plot to succeed her brother, Governor Bukola Saraki when the latter's two-term tenure draws to a close in 2011.But the big question is: would she pull off this seemingly impossible task?

Among the Senator's aides and associates, optimism are quite high. They are simply banking on the alleged support of the Senator's father, Dr. Olusola Saraki, who decides who gets what, when and how in Kwara politics.

They are also positing that the elder Saraki is wary of allowing the control of the governorship seat be entrusted in the hands of a 'stranger' who may in the long run prove disloyal. But for now, no one can tell who Governor Saraki will throw his weight behind, but there are strong indications that he is not favourably disposed to her sister's ambition.

But like the game of chess, the Senator has a fall-back option just in case her governorship ambition doesn't work out: contest for the Senate Presidency in 2011.
