Opinion: Belgore's Defeatist Game

Date: 2014-01-23

In every contest, the hand of a loser is easily identifiable. Why? Because he is always slow to reading the equation accurately with a view to modulating strategy, and two, he is habitually unaligned with popular causes whenever the need to shift grounds arises. This is unlike his strategic counterpart who knows when to move forward or retreat.

A former governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2011 election in Kwara State, Dele Belgore, seems to have an overrated impression of himself, perhaps. Some even say he is highly conceited. Whatever! After all, all of these might as well be mere perceptions. What then do you make of his recent underhand in the politics of Kwara State?

Since the move by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to expand the scope of the party started with scheduled visits to target states, he had technically taken a back seat as if he had nothing to do with the outcome of the initiative, ultimately in his Kwara State.

Finally when all was set and the APC was able to pull through in major states including Kwara, he has begun to show his hands, in a fashion that is literally and technically inimical to the collective interest of the party. How? He is yet to come to terms with the fact that Senator Bukola Saraki, a former governor of the state and financier/leader of the former PDP is automatically the leader of the APC in the state.

First, is there a basis for comparison between the two? None, without prejudice, comes to mind. Apart from the fact that he was able to leverage on his family name to fly the ACN flag in 2011, where was Belgore before now? What can he point to as his contribution, not just in terms of party politics but also to the growth and development of Kwara?

Where, therefore, is his recalcitrant stance coming from? This is simply playing the loser's game and the earlier he recognises the fact, the better for him to be accorded relevance in the new order. But if no one has told him yet, this is a defeatist game he has set out to play and he is surely going to get a bloody nose from this highway to nowhere except he makes a smart retreat. He had better think like a SAN, a witty one at that and align with a popular cause. Just saying!

The Joke on Tukur

It is unlikely that the former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, quits the consciousness of the people any time soon, despite having left office through a forced resignation. Of course, the president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, had hinted that he would give him an even tougher assignment, albeit without alluding to what specifically.

However, there are speculations doing the rounds that he might be compensated with a ministerial appointment. Some even say he has been penciled down for the Defence Ministry. Wherever that is coming from, not many are bothered!

But a certain joke has been trending on the social media and you can't but laugh out loud. Here: "Dear all, if the rumour turns out to be true and GEJ appoints Bamanga Tukur as Defence Minister, won't the Nigerian Army defect to the Police Force???" Well, if it turns out true, really; that's a million naira question for both the appointor and the appointee. Interesting times, isn't it?
