Man Arraigned for Impersonating Police

A man, Mohammed Lapai Shagari has been arraigned before an lIorin Magistrate Court for allegedly impersonating a police officer.

The 30-year-old accused of Taoheed Road, Basin, llorin, was on April 26, 2012 arrested along Taiwo Road, llorin, at about 10:30pm with .alleged forged Nigeria Police Force identity card.

The accused was said to have claimed to be a security guard.

Shagari was dragged before the court on a two-count charge of forgery and impersonation, which contradict Sections 364 and 132 of Penal Code law.

A surveillance patrol team from 'B' Division Police Station, Surulere, Ilorin, had arrested the accused while riding an unregistered daylong motorcycle along Taiwo Road, IIorin.

When he was challenged, he allegedly produced a forged superior police officer's identity card bearing his photograph and personating himselfto be a police officer.

Police First Information Reprot (FIR) on the matter stated that when the accused was further questioned he court not give a satisfactory account of how he came about the forged police identity card.

The FIR added that investigation conducted at the State CID, Ilorin, revealed that the accused committed the offences.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Earnest Eniolorunda had told the court that police are yet to complete their investigation on the matter. He urged the court to adjourn the case until further date to enable the police carry out detailed investigation.

He also objected to the He bail of the accused on the ground that the alleged offences are not ordinarily bailable and he prayed the court to remand the accused at the prison custody, Ilorin, until the next adjourned date.

The defence prayed the court to admit the accused to bail pending the determination of the case. He submitted that the the accused will not jump bail and will provide reliable sureties that would ensure that the accused present at every adjourned date.

Magistrate A.S. Olanikewu, who presided over the case, stated that the law still presumed the accused innocent of the allegation until contrary is proved.

Consequently, he admitted the accused to bail at the sum ofN 100,000 and two sureties in like sum.

Olanikewu added that the sureties must be ordinariIy residence within the jurisdiction of the court, while he adjourned the case till May 21 for further mention.
