Date: 2012-05-08

The immediate past acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, has proffered solution to militancy in the North and general state of insecurity in the country.

Baraje who said that the present insecurity in the country called for concern just as he said that the militancy had assumed international dimension.

The former PDP chairman who traced the security challenges confronting the nation to the twin-problems of corruption and unemployment, urged government to make deliberate efforts to curb corruption and as well provide job opportunities for the Nigerian youths.

He  advised the federal government to restructure the school syllabus across board towards skills acquisition to enable the students to be self-employed upon graduation.

He noted that youths were more involved in  anti-social behaviours such as robbery, kidnapping and other violent activities, adding that solutions to these problems lie in the provision of employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.

"The ages of 18 and 26 are rebellious times for the youths, if you get them engaged within this period they will become useful citizens, but if you don’t they will turn criminals," he noted.

Baraje advised the government to allocate more fund for the training of security personnel to enable them meet the demand of the modern time in securing lives and properties of the citizenry.

"Government should find ways of telling the religious leaders to educate the adherents of the two religious on the evil inherent in taking other people’s lives", he said.

He added that, "Nigerian leaders should come together in a very small group and proffer solutions and suggestions to the government on the security problems.

"We have other priorities as a nation but the issue of security should be uppermost. Insecurity in Nigeria calls for concern. It has gotten to a stage where we should educate ourselves on how to be extra vigilant on security.
